Apple Fritters

With Valentine's Day fast approaching - I'm sure EVERYONE celebrates this holiday, right? - I thought I'd put something a little sweeter on the menu. Sure, I'm always preaching that I'd rather have another steak than a stacked chocolate cake, but today I'm making these for the husband. He doesn't share my cravings, mostly because he's vegetarian, but also because he could devour a bag of Halloween candy in a sitting ... which just made me realize why we buy so many sweets that day when we only get 2 neighborhood kids knocking on our door. 

These fritters include the beloved apple that is so abundant in my part of the world. I've also paired these with the icing that I've used before on the blog instead of glazing the whole fritter. They like flirting instead of being all over each other. 

I like to think of this specific day of love, however odd and commercialized it is, as a time to show affection to all the people around me. And why not do it with something to eat, because at the end of the day, food truly is love. 


Apple Fritters

About 2 dozen

2 Pink Lady apples
2 cups all purpose flour
1/3 cup white sugar
1 TBSP baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 TBSP cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1 cup whole milk
2 TBSP melted butter
1 TBSP vanilla extract
2 eggs

Vegetable oil for frying
Powdered sugar for dusting on top


  1. Cut the apples into small pieces, about 1/4" in size.
  2. Whisk all of the dry ingredients together. In another bowl, whisk all of the wet ingredients. Then, pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture, and combine gently until you get a wet dough. Fold in the apple pieces.
  3. Pour about 2 inches of oil in a pot and heat to about medium. When the oil is hot enough, gently drop Tablespoons of the dough into the pot without crowding any of them. Fry for about 5 minutes, then flip a fry for an addition 5 minutes. Cool on a rack with a pan underneath to catch the oil. Continue in batches.
  4. Serve warm with powdered sugar dusted on top and icing on the side
