Simple Icing

Ahh February. Love is in the air. Sweets are all around. Awkward Valentine's exchanges are a plenty. I vote that it's perfectly fine to Treat Yo Self, because who knows what you want better than you. 

I'm more of a savory gal myself, but icing makes me think about my mom and her cinnamon rolls. She would make everything from scratch and make huge batches that I could share with my friends. Now that's love.

This icing is simple and easy to make, but makes anything you top it with special. 

There's just four ingredients: powdered sugar, butter, milk and vanilla.

In a food processor, or with a mixer, pulse the room temperature butter a few times to break it up. 

Add the powdered sugar, and pulse as many times needed to get the ingredients fully incorporated. If you added vanilla at this point, you would have a frosting instead of an icing. 

Drizzle in milk from the top of the food processor, while it's fully on, until you get a smooth consistency. This will only take a couple minutes. 

Add the vanilla while the food processor is still on for about another minute. 

And now you have icing! This is ready to glaze a cinnamon roll or ...

Simple Icing | makes about 1 ½ cups

2 ¼ cups powdered sugar
4 TBSP butter, room temperature
2 TBSP whole or 2% milk
1 tsp vanilla extract


  1. In a food processor, pulse the butter a few times.

  2. Add the powdered sugar and pulse until evenly incorporated.

  3. Turn on the food processor and drizzle in the milk until you get a smooth consistency, then add the vanilla extract. Keep in the refrigerator until use.
